iPhone 3G upgrade to iOS 4 and then, no wifi

Ok, so I just upgraded my iPhone 3G from software version 3.1.3 to iOS 4. For the most part, a (long but) painless process. Once it was complete though, I was perusing through the menu options and noted that all of the Wi-Fi options were greyed out. This is where the journey began and, as of the time of this post, I'm still en route to the resolution. Looking around the Internet, it's clear that I'm not the only one that's having this problem, so I'm posting the various steps on my journey here to hopefully save someone else some time. So, to get you up to date this far.

- I'm using an iPhone 3G that *had* software version 3.1.3
- My computer is a Macbook Pro with iTunes v9.2 (61)
- I connected the iPhone to the laptop via USB and started the upgrade process. The process took a couple of hours and there was no real indication of failure along the way
- I can still make and receive calls
- I can still use the 3G network for data
- I cannot 'see' wireless networks
- If I go to Settings, Wi-Fi is greyed out and just says 'No Wifi' out to the right
- I've power cycled the iPhone (press and hold the power button on the top right until you get the red slider to power it off) multiple times, no luck
- I've gone to Settings -> General -> Reset and reset the network settings, no luck
- I've gone to Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings, no luck

- So, at this point, since I ponied up for the Apple Care, I decided to give Apple a call. First, let me say how refreshing it was to speak *immediately* to a live person who spoke English as her first language. Anyway, I digress. She noted that this happens sometimes with the iPhone 3G and confirmed that I had done all of the steps noted above. At that point, she told me that a restore was in my future and provided some helpful links (below). I'll keep you posted on my success:

iPhone #3 had network connectivity issues

Well, I noted it on Facebook but didn't think to note it here. The iPhone that I as a replacement for my upgraded iPhone had some serious connectivity issues. Conservatively, 2 out of 3 calls would initially fail and at least as many network attempts (e.g., to sync email) also failed. After the usual reset network setting, etc., I called AT&T who promptly sent me back to the fruit people. The fruit people sent me a brand new iPhone that arrived today and is syncing now. I am hoping that this brings this drama to an end.

New iPhone with OS v3.1.3 and told not to upgrade

Well, Apple exchanged my old iPhone (that I had upgraded to IOS4) with a new one (with iPhone OS 3.1.3) and, as you may imagine, it's working just fine. What's more, when I asked about upgrading this new one to IOS4, I was told (by the guy at the Apple store) to hold off until at least a version or two had been released. So, with that, the case is closed on this little kerfuffle and I'm happily chugging along on iPhone OS 3.1.3 until I see some really good news on the IOS4 front. I'm curious to see what I get first, an iPhone running IOS4 or an Android phone. Time will tell.

Well, restore as new and..... still no wifi

Well, per the Apple instructions, I've completed the restore as a new iPhone process and still no wifi. Also, no settings, no photos, no music, etc. I am in the process now of putting it all back (manually, just in case), but still no wifi.
